ORGANIZING TIP OF THE WEEK: ANOTHER RECYCLING OPTION FOR COMPUTERS Looking for someplace to donate a still working computer? Check out Computers Across Borders (CAB). On their web site (http://www.computersacrossborders.org), CAB describes itself as “a non-profit charitable foundation that is recycling used computers to teachers and classrooms in underserved areas. We particularly target schools that are employing renewable energy to power their classrooms and reduce their carbon footprint and reduce global warming.” CAB accepts donations from corporations and individuals. Based on each computer’s viability for recycling, CAB refits it with any new equipment (such as software or laptop batteries) and donates it to teachers in underserved areas, utilizing NGOs in developing nations to assist with targeting recipients, basic training, and assistance. Desktop computers get distributed to classrooms in the U.S., and laptops (because of their portability and lower power consumption) go to teachers in developing countries where the village is powered by renewable energy. International programs are underway in India, Senegal, Ghana, and Ecuador. |
